How the Estimate Is Built
1. Size
Part envelope and layout. Mold size begins with the part envelope, then adds room for cavities, runners, cooling, support and side action. A larger projected area also increases the estimated clamp requirement. The displayed range is deliberately broad because wall thickness, draft, gate location and mold-base standards are not known at this stage.
2. Production
Volume and cavity strategy. Annual volume influences the preliminary cavity count and expected tool life. More cavities can reduce cycle demand per cavity, but they increase mold size, hot-runner scope, balancing work and initial tooling cost. A customer-selected cavity count is shown with Low Confidence until an engineer confirms fill balance and press fit.
3. Material
Material and tooling conditions. Resin choice affects shrinkage, wear, corrosion protection, processing temperature and steel selection. Filled nylon, PPS, PEEK and PFA trigger more conservative assumptions. Surface finish, transparency, dimensional stability and sterilization exposure can also change the recommended insert steel, gate and cooling design.
What Changes Tooling Cost?
The main cost drivers are the mold base, number of cavities, insert steel, sliders or unscrewing systems, runner choice and the machining complexity needed to hold part geometry. Tight tolerances, thin walls, optical surfaces, shutoffs and deep ribs usually require additional design review and manufacturing control.
The estimate excludes mold-flow analysis, part redesign, validation documentation, inspection fixtures, resin, production parts, freight, duties and taxes unless a written quotation includes them.
How Press and T1 Are Estimated
Press tonnage is estimated from projected area and a material-dependent cavity-pressure factor. It is not a machine reservation or process-window guarantee. Final machine selection also depends on shot size, platen and tie-bar clearance, injection rate, screw diameter, hot-runner interface and robotic access.
T1 timing starts after final 3D data, DFM and mold-design approval. Design changes, special steel availability, complex mechanisms, sampling material and validation requirements can extend the schedule.
From Preliminary Estimate to Firm Quote
For a firm quotation, send the native 3D model or a neutral STEP file, the 2D drawing with tolerances, resin grade, cosmetic requirements, expected annual volume and required quality documentation. Use controlled revision identifiers and remove patient or clinical information. If the design is confidential, arrange an NDA before sending detailed files.
